About Me

How can I help?

Hey there, I’m Ben Josie. Are you or your teen feeling misunderstood? Struggling to connect or communicate with your partner(s) or the people in your life? In need of some skills to regulate difficult emotions and build confidence? Stuck in difficult family patterns? Exploring new identities in order to become the most authentic version of yourself? You have come to the right place! In my years as a High School teacher, I have been inspired by a diverse group of young people whose challenges are as unique as their passions. It is an honor to provide space for fears and struggles that are often dismissed or misunderstood.

In our work together, we will build trust as we create goals to become the person you want to be. I value full honesty, and will tell you the things you need to hear, even if you don’t want to hear them. It is a privilege and an honor to hold clients’ secrets—no matter how scary it may feel to share them. Whether we are discussing addiction, sexual fantasies, traumatic experiences or any other topic you struggle to talk about, I promise you provide a non-judgmental space where you feel safe to share your burdens when you feel ready. My work is neurodiverse-, queer- and kink-affirming. I value creativity, expressiveness and kind humor both in my life and my therapy practice.

I encourage you to reach out for an initial consultation so we can take the first step together!

And all the voices, all the goals, all the yearnings, all the sorrows, all the pleasures, all the good and evil, all of them together was the world. All of them together was the stream of events, the music of life.

Areas of Focus

  • Relationships are fundamental to the human experience. We are born in relationship, we are hurt in relationship, and we can grow in relationship. Whether we are discussing a romantic partner, a best friend or a family member, relationships can be messy. Many, though not all, relationships can be improved with new communication skills. I would love to help you and your partner(s) to break patterns, improve communication and build stronger relationships.

  • Sex is a foundational aspect of the human existence. Yet, there is so much conflicting messaging from our society about sex. Perhaps you never received the sex education you deserve. Perhaps you are exploring how to improve sex with your partner(s). Perhaps you have experienced sexual trauma. Perhaps you are navigating new sexual identit(ies). Whatever the case may be, I offer a non-judgmental space to ask questions and share feelings—no matter how embarrassing they may seem.

  • For the past 5 years, I have worked as a high school teacher and counselor at leadership camp. In these roles, I have learned about the unique needs of adolescents and teenagers. So often disempowered, I work to help teens grow into the best versions of themselves. Whether we are learning tools to manage mental health and mood or communication skills, it’s easier to grow when you have a trusted partner.

  • As a teacher, I have worked to become an advocate for the neurodivergent community. I wholeheartedly believe that autism and ADHD are not “disabilities” or something to be "cured." Navigating the world as a neurodivergent person can allow you to tap into a level of empathy, creativity, energy, joy that many people will never understand. I offer a space where you will be affirmed and supported as you grow and navigate this identity.

DBT Groups

DBT is a skills-based therapy that has been shown to be effective in treating a wide variety of issues, such as personality disorders, addiction, eating disorders, and for those who struggle to regulate their emotions or maintain healthy relationships.

DBT promotes both acceptance and change of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors to manage and reduce mental health problems. Mindfulness is a central part of this treatment approach. The fundamental concept in DBT is that opposites can coexist and be harmonized. In other words, DBT brings together two things that seem to be opposites—acceptance and change—to achieve better treatment results.

You can learn more about DBT and its origins here.
